zabbix on CentOS 5

I've recently been asked to investigate Zabbix and found this guide to installing Zabbix 1.4 on CentOS.

However, I also found that Zabbox RPMs are available in the EPEL repository, which makes installation much mores straight-forward.

Watch out America, here I come!

I'm heading off to Los Angeles today to meet the guys at RIS. I shall try and blog my trip here as I go along.

Phase one: train from York to Heathrow. well, strictly speaking, York to London to Heathrow - I'll have got get across London on the tube to get Heathrow Express from Paddington.

National Express provide free wifi on the train; as you can see it seems to work well! unfortunately, the power socket at my seat is not working and my laptop doesn't work on battery for very long, so this post was typed on my PDA.

I wonder if there's 'net connection on the plane? We'll see...

root access to zfs datasets shared over NFS

One of the great things about zfs on Solaris is how it integrates with NFS, thus making it very easy to manage NFS shares.

By default, the root user on a client machine has restricted access to an NFS-mounted share.

Here's how to grant full access to local root users to NFS mounts:

zfs set sharenfs=rw=@192.168.1.0/24,root=@192.168.1.0/24 space

This gives full access for root users on any machine in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet to the zfs dataset "space".

flac 1.1.4 on FC6 - fix SELinux errors

I wanted to install flac v1.1.4 on my FC6 box but there is no RPM for FC6.

I installed from source but got this error when running flac:

flac: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libFLAC.so.8: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied

This is an SELinux problem. I fixed it using:

chcon -t textrel_shlib_t /usr/lib/libFLAC.so.8*

Using eth1 with xen (instead of eth0)

I have a xen box running FC6 with a couple of guest machines (also running FC6). The hardware has two network interfaces, eth0 (10/100MB/s) and eth1 (1GB/s). I was using eth0 as the primary interface but I've just got a gigabit switch and want to move the machine onto it. So I've reconfigured the host to use eth1 as the primary interface.

Here's what I needed to change to get xen to use the new interface.

java on CentOS 5

I recently needed to install Java onto a CentOS 5 machine.
Instructions are available at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS but I found that they didn't work with the latest JDK from Sun.

Blog moves to new server.

After battling for several months with various root kits on the server hosting this site I've finally admitted defeat and taken it offline.

I've moved this blog plus my projects and downloads onto another machine so it *should* be business as usual.

Please drop me an email and let me know if you find anything that's broken.

Back online - for now

After getting root-kitted due to a vulerability in the rich text editor used by geeklog, I took the server hosting this site offline.

I'm in the process of moving the whole lot to a new server, but in the meantime, I've brought the server back online.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

R.
